— CHAPTER EIGHT—

Ruby

THE SKIES HAD CLEARED BY time Anne left Charlie and his new information behind her. His car had just about coughed and stuttered its way to her destination and now Anne found herself waiting alone on a park bench as instructed, after a quiet walk along Holland Avenue and past the secondary school.

She looked around her to see if she could spot any sign of the man she was to be meeting, but it was past lunchtime and the park was beginning to empty out. Adults returning to their jobs in Notting Hill or down Kensington High Street, while pupils returned to the school.

She spied a man coming from the other direction, presumably from Abbotsbury Road. His black bowler hat was pulled down low over his eyes, a briefcase in one hand with a long black umbrella in the other. Anne stood up to get a better look but the man soon passed her and she realised with a heavy heart he wasn’t who she was waiting for. She sat back down again and watched as two haughty peacocks made their way in short staccato strides across the green grass before disappearing into the shrubbery.

Alone for the first time in days, Anne wondered how Bill and Patricia were doing back at the house without her. She was sure they would be safe there. She hoped Bill would be able to track down Lethbridge-Stewart. It would be a risk getting him involved, but Anne knew that she could trust him, and right now she knew they needed all the friends they could get. Besides, if he had any hesitations or objections she was certain that if anyone could talk him around it would be her.

She sat in contemplative silence for a few moments more, debating whether or not it was worth staying. Perhaps the whole thing had just been a ruse to lead her away from the house after all? Perhaps Bill and Patricia were in trouble right at that very moment, and here she was sitting on a park bench with no idea?

Her racing thoughts were halted by a voice at her side.

‘Hello,’ the newcomer said brightly. ‘May I take this seat?’

Anne turned, expecting to see the wizened face of the man she had been waiting for. Instead she was met by a pair of flashing green eyes belonging to a young woman, of about twenty.

‘Of course,’ Anne said. She moved her handbag out of the way and watched, curiously, as the woman sat down next to her on the bench.

She slipped off her coat, lying it down on the damp wood so as not to get her clothes wet. Underneath the woman was wearing a fashionable green shift dress with lace appliqué sleeves. On her feet she wore white kitten heeled pumps slightly muddied by the rain, and her short hair was neatly combed with tiny flicks at the bottom just past her ears.

Anne glanced around her, wondering where her contact was.

‘Now,’ the girl said, taking a moment to rearrange her hair under her ears, and settle her handbag onto her lap.
